The Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta caves are approximately thirty rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the second century BCE to about 480 CE in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India. The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art and expressive paintings that present emotions through gesture, pose, and form.

However, despite being a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ajanta Caves do not have a brand identity. I wanted to create a visual system for the caves by treating it like a gallery for Indian Traditional Art. I aimed to form a strong way-finding system by developing individual icons for each cave, expanding on it and creating a robust set of symbols and a map to provide more information for visitors. The map also comes with a little flashlight to help visitors navigate their route within the darkness of the caves.
