CONCEPT DESIGN

Raja Aur Rani (King & Queen)

Raja aur Rani is a logo animation made for Bombay Fables, an Indian production house, that prides itself on their modern storytelling.

The main characters are inspired by the paintings of a famous Bengali artist, Jamini Roy. The overall appearance of the animation has been derived from shadow puppetry, an ancient form of storytelling in Indian Culture. Like Shadow play which tells the story of gods and goddesses, delving deep into the worlds of mythology and fables, the animation too narrates the tragic love story of a King and Queen.

The red creates an air of menace surrounding the King and Queen, as they’re set aflame by an angry crowd protesting their love. The logo animation is a contemporary take on ancient Indian storytelling practices. I wanted to replicate the play of light and shadow, a crucial element in the art of shadow puppetry, trying to preserve the essence of traditional shadow art.
